Message from the Head of School
As you read this, Shabbat will soon be upon us. The glow of the Shabbat candles will have even more special significance to me tonight after having been a part of our annual Chumash presentation to second-graders yesterday. During this milestone event, second-graders receive their first Chumash, the first book of the Tora h. As part of a DKJA tradition, students demonstrate their Torah knowledge in an entertaining show, incorporating stories form the scriptures acted out in lively productions by each class. As the grandmother of a Chumash recipient, the event held even more significance for me. Now, I am the proud grandmother of a proud second-grader who is eager to continue his Torah studies. In the photo at left, you can see a few of our very accomplished students and their teachers as they prepared for the ceremony.
Many more milestone moments lie ahead in the upcoming days. Grandparents' & Special Friends' Day is next Friday, February 12, 2010, and we look forward to seeing our extended DKJA family there.
Make A Note: Every parent has received a "Parent Satisfaction Survey" via e-mail. The surveys will help us as we write our Strategic Plan. We hope that we have 100% participation. Although it appears long, it will only take 10-15 minutes of your time. We need everyone’s input as we continue the DKJA journey. Please fill yours out today!
Shabbat Shalom,
Karen Feller

Lower School Highlights
Third Grade Bible Play
The third grade students presented their annual Bible Play called “Scenes from the Torah,” which is based on the Chumash context taught in the classrooms. Students portrayed their knowledge of the biblical text; moreover, they displayed an understanding of the lessons, morals, and values which were drawn from the Torah. This dynamic play was expressed through the different Art mediums such as Israeli dance, a modern (hip hop style) dance, singing, and humor. In addition, two violinists and one cello player contributed their talents to the play, as well as the musicians from seventh-grade, adding excitement and ruach. The play was presented under the direction of Mrs. Nitza Hartung and Mrs. Shelley Katz.
M usic Students Show Their Artistic Talents
Two DKJA students have entered the Plank Road Publishing 18th Annual “Draw A Cover for Music K-8 Magazine” contest. The winning entry will be printed on the cover of the May/June 2010 issue of the magazine. The winners will receive a check for $200. Daniela Abbo and Shaina Goodis, both second-graders in Mrs. Hartman’s class, each demonstrated their artistic skills by creating colorful drawings. Best of luck!
One Hundred Days of Learning

Time for Tu B’Shevat!
By Emily Azoalos, Fifth-grade Student
Last Friday, a celebration of a Tu B’Shevat Seder took place in fifth grade.
During the seder, we tried most of the fruits in the Shevat Haminim (the seven kinds that Israel was blessed with). We said the prayers and had a fun time. Tu B’shevat is a holiday to celebrate the trees. We should all appreciate what plants give and do for us. No matter how old or young you are you must still plant trees for the future.
JNF Speaker Visits Sixth Grade
On Monday, Mr. Bernstein from the Jewish National Fund (JNF) talked to the sixth-grade students about Kibbutz Yahar in the Negev. The JNF was established more than 100 years ago. The JNF plants trees, creates parks, and does other significant things for Israel. The JNF was instrumental in helping settlements grow and develop in the Negev through the Blueprint Negev initiative.
One of the signature crops grown in Kibbutz Yahar is the pomelo fruit, which originated in Southeast Asia. Mr. Bernstein brought one in, cut it, and let the students taste it. The sixth grade enjoyed the presentation and became better aware of the significant efforts that the JNF is undertaking in Israel.
High School Highlights
The High School at Donna Klein Jewish Academy hosted its first annual Dodgeball Tournament, presented by the Student Council. Eight teams consisting of five boys and girls, including one faculty team, participated to win the brand new trophy and have their team name engraved into the plaque. Competitive excitement and fun ensued in the afternoon as the teams gave their whole-hearted efforts and made a huge splash for the high school's new event. In the end, it was Wally's Whopping Wallabies, comprised of Captain Grayson Lapayover, Kevin Moore, Michael Bank, Samantha Peitzer, and Alyssa Zukowsky, who were victorious.
